How to loom knit a tiny hat (with video tutorial)

Ever heard of loom knitting? It’s just knitting without using regular knitting needles. And it’s a lot less complicated.

A knitting loom is basically a frame made of plastic, wood, metal or any combination of these materials. On it, you can find evenly spaced pegs that are either fixed or movable. Knitting looms come in several different shapes and sizes, depending on what you want to make. You can make flat panels of fabric for scarves, blankets, shawls, bags and so on, or fabric “tubes” that you can turn into hats, socks, gloves and baby items, to name a few.

Round knitting looms are available in various sizes. As a set, they will usually come equipped with at least a knitting hook (top left) and a yarn needle.
Some sets come with parts that you can assemble to form different shapes of looms. This set also comes with a tool for simple weaving.

Making The Tiny Hat

I use a small loom about 5.25 inches (13.5cm) in diameter to make the tiny hat. The red yarn is 12-ply acrylic.

To make a simple hat, all you need is a round knitting loom, a knitting tool or pick, a yarn needle, a pair of scissors and a ball of yarn. Of course there are other tools that might come in handy when you start making more complicated items but for a start, these five items are all you need.
